I love Mexico. With its expansive white sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue waters, charming villages bursting with authentic flavors and European flair, and mountain ranges covered in lush tropical forests, Mexico is a country rich in culture and breathtaking beauty. It’s no wonder that over 1.5 million Americans and Canadians now call Mexico home, at least part of the year.
Whether drawn by the tranquil beauty of the beaches or the affordable, laid-back lifestyle, more and more foreigners are choosing Mexico as a place to retire, relocate, or simply enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation.
This book simplifies the relocation process to Mexico, allowing you to pursue your dreams without the stress that comes with doing something both important and unfamiliar.

"We were fortunate to have Ian Wilson as our realtor. Ian spent a considerable amount of time relaying his impressive knowledge and guidance. He made the process easy to understand, giving us confidence that allowed us to pursue our dream. But the most important aspect was our trust and faith were put in a person that followed through and was true to his word. In this day and age that is the best thing I can say about anybody. Ian is a great agent, but more importantly, he is a great person."

Welcome! I’m Ian Wilson, and I’m thrilled to help you navigate the process of finding your dream home in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Over the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of being one of the top-producing realtors in this breathtaking region, assisting individuals and families in relocating to this hidden gem of the Baja Peninsula.
Originally from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, my career began in a different kind of paradise. At 24, I set off on an adventure as a Scuba Diving Instructor with Royal Caribbean Cruises, spending two unforgettable years exploring the world’s oceans and sharing my passion with others. My love for travel and connecting with people naturally led me into sales and marketing, where I continued to explore the globe for the next decade. After those ten exciting years traveling aboard cruise ships, I was based in Miami, Florida, where I spent the next 15 years leading sales and marketing divisions for both Royal Caribbean Cruises and Celebrity Cruises. These years were pivotal in shaping my expertise in marketing and client relations, giving me a unique perspective on how to successfully connect people with experiences and opportunities—skills that have proven invaluable in my real estate career.
Upon relocating to Mexico, I immediately leveraged this wealth of marketing experience to accelerate my career as a realtor. My passion for helping others, coupled with a deep understanding of what draws people to new destinations, has allowed me to become a trusted expert for those looking to relocate or invest in property in La Paz. Whether you’re searching for a vacation home or planning to relocate permanently, I’m here to make the process as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Let’s get started on your journey to discovering the best that Baja has to offer!
Ian lives in La Paz, BCS with Loki, Freya, Guapo, and Thor...his 4 rescue cats. He always considered himself a dog person, and no one (except the cats) knows how he ended up living with four furry terrorists. In his free time, he enjoys Scuba, snorkeling, exploring everything the peninsula has to offer, and finding new and innovative ways to market his clients' listings.
A tourist visa will allow you to stay in Mexico for up to 6 months at a time. If you'd prefer to stay in the country year-round, a temporary residency visa is a good option...up to 4 years. A temporary resident visa will also allow you to work, though there are restrictions, and you right to work will be attached to the specific company who helps you apply. If this is a more permanent relocation, a permanent residency visa is the best option...and will allow you to work in Mexico without any restrictions.
Yes, you can bring your household goods with you to Mexico. If buying a property, you can arrange for a 'menaje de casa' through your local Mexican Consulate - this is a one time, duty-free, import of your personal goods. Nothing can be brand new, so if you plan to bring newer items like televisions, remove the packaging and price tags prior to loading the moving truck ;)
Yes, you can! Make sure any dogs or cats are up to date on their vaccinations - check with your local consulate to determine the latest requirements to ensure you've got all the needed paperwork with you. Mexico is a very pet-friendly country. Viva mascotas!
Yes, there are. There are both international moving companies (though they tend to be on the more expensive side), and local moving companies that can move your things from the US or Canada to Mexico. Reach out for our recommendations if you're planning a move to Baja California Sur.
I love it here. LOVE IT. But I don't miss high-end shopping malls, huge nightclubs, or the hustle and bustle of a large metropolitan city. The character of La Paz is very relaxed, and the locals are very welcoming. This is not a place where the local economy depends on tourism, so the local population doesn't look at the expat community as a constant source of revenue...instead, you're welcomed with open arms and treated like a local. To me, integrating with the local population, eating amazing food, enjoying being on the Sea of Cortez with it's extraordinary beaches and amazing life (I'm talking to YOU, whale sharks!) is paradise. Try visiting and staying for 3 - 6 months. There's a good chance you'll decide to stay.
